Saturday morning, September 21st, as many other cadets from the academy were sleeping in, five 1st year rifle team cadets representing the SMA Rifle Team headed to Riverview HS for our first match of the year.
Our team of 4 freshmen (Jacob Lunde, Eva Nazario, Thomas Reisinger and Austin Wedin) and 1 sophomore (Noah Broneill) had an experience in “running and shooting.” This match is the only of its kind in that the cadets shoot the normal 10 shots in each position however they also run a lap around the track at Riverview HS after shooting their 10 shots in each position. This added challenge makes shooting that much more difficult as their heartbeat and respirations are greatly increased.
Shooting a 3rd high total score and 3rd high kneeling with a score of 229, freshman Eva Nazario led SMA. Also shooting well was Noah Broneill with a 226 and Thomas Reisinger had the high kneeling score. Rounding out our team was Austin Wedin and Jacob Lunde.
The team had a total of 831, taking home 2nd place in season opener at Riverview. The accomplishment is in the fact that SMA limits our County League Match competitors to those 1st year team members whereas others may use their Varsity Team.
Congratulations… the Standards of Excellence continues!
The SMA Rifle Team competed in their 2nd match of the year in the Sarasota County JROTC Air Rifle League in the match hosted by Desoto. The 5 that represented SMA Rifle were: Noah Broneill, Eva Nazario, Thomas Reisinger, Simon Tilden and Austin Wedin.
Our team took home 1st Place honors with one of the top scores ever in this match with a 959, over 40 points more than 2nd Place Venice and almost 70 points over 3rd Place Sarasota HS.
The team was led by both freshman Thomas Reisinger and Eva Nazario, both with 258 as Reisinger took the tie-breaker with 2 more center 10s than Nazario. These 2 took the top total scoring spots in the league.
Broneill was consistent with a 224 and Wedin had an improvement of close to 50 points from his first match scoring 219. Simon Tilden in his first match had a 172 gaining much experience.
The team will next compete in the Sarasota County JROTC Rifle League at Sarasota HS.
